Simca 1000
Renault Dauphine
Hillman Imp, among other names
Porsche 356
Subaru 360
So dangerous! Even when the speed is zero! I feel the danger just looking at it!
I think this is the ugliest generation of the ForTwo
Twingo
NSU Prinz
Hino Contessa. Fun fact, these were built from CKD kits by Kaiser (yes, that Kaiser) in Israel.
Tata Nano
These were all the ones that I could think of. What other compact/economy cars came in the RR layout? EVs don’t count.

Yes

The color on that Dauphene.... Oooooweeeeeee! Really a lot of great colors here, but those deep, flat pastels on friendly looking old European cars...just the best.
I’m a big time “color” guy but have recently been coming around to BMW Bristol Grey because of cars like this.

WHAT? No FIATS? I am appalled and saddened! :P
FIAT 500:
FIAT 126 / 126p:
Suzuki Fronte LC10
Suzuki Fronte LC20:
Kinda sorta an economy car....it was a car in the UK under a government scheme to give those with mobility disabilities a vehicle with hand controls....the single-seat AC / Invacar Model 70:
The lower-spec trims of the Skoda 105/120/130/Estelle series...?

That Suzuki is horribly proportioned and I want it.

It gets over 40 mpg, kei car class, 63 hp. I’d say yes. It just happens to be one of the most fun to drive economy cars. I’ve owned almost exclusively economy cars and the AZ-1 so I’d say yes.

1964 FART BREACK
Amphicar
Bond Bug (at least I’m pretty sure it’s rear-engined)
Changli (I mean the electric motor is mounted to the back of the differential so technically it is rear-engined)
Tucker 48
1948 Mustang
Tatra T600 (the one with the flat four)
Benz Patent Patent Motor Car

But it was designed to be a toy, not as an actual daily driver. A Miata gets about 30 mpg and doesn’t have a ton of power, and it has a pretty compact footprint, but it’s absolutely not an economy car.

The Fronte LC20? I KNOW, right!?!? I really love it too, haha!
They even made it in a van variant, though I can’t find pics of it...
They look pretty frumpy from behind too! :P
Some really cool details though, like how one o
f those rear vents is fake and the gas door is behind it! (check out here about
halfway down the page)

Škoda 1000 MB was their first rear engined car.
Tatraplan/Tatra 600 was fairly fancy compared to most economy cars but it can be still regarded as one. It went extinct as the state wanted Tatra to focus into truck manufacturing.
Mercedes-Benz 130H W23 is stretching the definition of an economy car even further. But for a 30's M-B this was still somewhat affordable and offered quite little luxurious equipment.
BMW also tried making economy cars with their Isetta, 600 and 700. Isetta was actually designed by Italian Iso but it became more known by license built BMW version. Unlike Iso’s version, BMW did use 4-stroke engine and it had the best fuel consumption for a mass production car for a while.

You forgot Skoda. Back in the day they were almost all rear-engined.

Forgot about the sideways hood/trunk lid!

Kei cars are designed to be small city cars that are absolutely driven everyday in Japan.
Miata is a budget (economy) sports car.

Right, I’m saying that this car (and the other two) were designed to meet the Kei classification, while not actually being considerably similar to popular Kei cars. Nobody was cross shopping an AZ-1 with a Suzuki Wagon R.

Totally forgot about the Tucker.

By the same logic, would you say the Geo Metro convertible was not an economy car?

I dunno what I’d call that. What was it supposed to compete with? It was kind of in its own niche. I’m pretty sure they marketed it exclusively as a car to be towed behind a motor home.
